There was a similarly "exotic / strangely nostalgic" thing going on in joke / novelty shops when I was a kid; most of the designs and illustrations on the packaging looked like they came from the 30s, 40s or 50s, and they weren't being deliberately retro.
IT'S THE SCIENCE OF THE SEVENTIES, MAN...those are great! I always recall the ads for sea-monkeys in British comics. Because I took "monkey" at face value, I could never get my head around the idea of a species of tiny aquatic ape that had somehow completely by-passed the zoological community at large. Those things must have been a bitter disappointment to people who actually invested in a tank.
