One for sorrow

For some bizarre reason, my wife and her family always salute a solitary magpie if they see one to ward off the bad luck such a sighting can bring.

I am a deeply rational and non-superstitious person, so I just wink at it instead.

  1. From Wikipedia:
"If a lone Magpie is seen, one should salute it to show you respect it. This formality can be forgone if the Magpie looks directly in your eyes, which shows it respects you."

Loads more guff like this on Wiki. No mention of winking.

  2. That would be on the sister-site: Winkipedia.

My very superstitious friend says the following when he sees a magpie:

"Hello Mr Magpie, how's the wife and family?"

His mum was in the middle of saying it last year (a family thing? Or local?) when she collapsed and ended up in hospital. And he still bloody says it!
