The Rainbirds

Clive Exton was an interesting writer who could plough a very hauntological furrow when the mood took him.

When he wasn't providing screenplays for films like 'Entertaining Mr. Sloane', '10 Rillington Place' and the big screen 'Doomwatch', Exton mainly worked in television, with one of his most notable works being the 1971 Play For Today 'The Rainbirds', a bizarre experimental drama that may or may not be taking place in the damaged mind of a failed suicide as he lays in a coma.

Here's a clip. It's got more logos than a Formula One car, but it is rather rare and, like almost everything the BBC made between 1960 and 1980, long overdue a DVD release. Exton later wrote for the series 'Dead of Night', as well as providing a contemporary 'Ghost Story For Christmas' with 1977's 'Stigma'.
