“I Can’t Help Thinking That Somewhere In The Universe There Has To Be Something Better Than Man. Has To Be.”

"...and that completes my final report until we reach touchdown. We're now on full automatic, in the hands of the computers. I have tucked my crew in for the long sleep and I'll be joining them soon. In less than an hour, we'll finish our sixth month out of Cape Kennedy. Six months in deep space - by our time, that is. According to Dr. Haslein's theory of time, in a vehicle travelling nearly the speed of light, the Earth has aged nearly 700 years since we left it, while we've aged hardly at all. Maybe so. This much is probably true - the men who sent us on this journey are long since dead and gone. You who are reading me now are a different breed - I hope a better one. I leave the 20th century with no regrets. But one more thing - if anybody's listening, that is. Nothing scientific. It's purely personal. But seen from out here everything seems different. Time bends. Space is boundless. It squashes a man's ego. I feel lonely. That's about it. Tell me, though. Does man, that marvel of the universe, that glorious paradox who sent me to the stars, still make war against his brother? Keep his neighbor's children starving? "

  1. Yes war is still raging. It is a shame and a horrible truth but as long as people want and have power wars will continue.

  2. Sorry, man. Still here. Still warlike.

  3. Isn't this Charlton Heston's introductory monologue in Planet of the Apes?

  4. We're still warlike and you became the spokesperson for the NRA, you know, the "guns don't kill people" people.
BTW - Check Stewart's Suspended Animation pod before you bed down.

  5. Until we reach the brink of ultimate destruction, no one and nothing will change. By then, it may be too late.
And no matter how many movies are made on the subject and should serve as a lesson to man,
we think of it as just entertainment...something that cannot and will not happen to us - at least not in our lifetime, so why worry.

  6. Greed of money that buy madmen "POWER". It's not what makes the world go round, but rather cause it to eventually stop! I hope we're still here in another 700 years.

  7. Does anyone know if this is from Rod Serling's draft, or was this added later? It definitely feels like Serling. Recognized it right away from the subject line.

  8. Thought provoking tale. Write on!

  9. How relevant is this to today? Very I would say. How old is the need of man to treat each other so poorly? Too old in my opinion.
We sci-fi fans should be running the world by now. Hopefully it will happen before we of the Star Wars generation are too old to appreciate it.
Rise up fellow geeks, nerds and dweebs! Reclaim the world in peace and understanding. For we are the example of mankind that need be sent out into the universe to represent what humanity is truly capable of.
    This quote says it all.
"It can't be bargained with. It can't be reasoned with. It doesn't feel pity or remorse or fear, and it absolutely will not stop, ever, until you are dead."-Reese Terminator
Oh! Wait! Not that one. This one - “If each man or woman could understand that every other human life is as full of sorrows, or joys, or base temptations, of heartaches and of remorse as his own . . . how much kinder, how much gentler he would be.”
    William Allen White quotes
    There, that's better.

  10. I hope you find something better, my friend. Someone with true ethical maturity and compassion, and a race that sees more value in peace and harmony than war and loss. If you do, I pray that you come back and send my ashes to there on the next freighter so that I might reincarnate - be recycled - into something truly better.

  11. “If each man or woman could understand that every other human life is as full of sorrows, or joys, or base temptations, of heartaches and of remorse as his own . . . how much kinder, how much gentler he would be.”

This means that nobody is different, that we are all the same, so let's treat others as we want to be treated! Peace is a state of mind, believe and make others believe, with Love, with respect... As you want to be treated...
