My son used to go spark-out pretty much the instant the hoover was switched on. I've heard that it's because the soft roaring noise is similar to "womb music", ie the sound of blood etc rushing around you in the womb.
Still works on me, though I prefer the blow-heater, which is less harsh and supplies lovely lovely instant warmth. *dribble*
Could be particularly useful if you're trying to get your baby to sleep. My kids responded well to the vacuum cleaner.
