Not So Much A Facelift...

Lovely, 24 minute long PIF on the subject of General Improvement Areas, 1976.  Viewable in full at the BFI site:

Don't be put off by the bloke with the guitar at the beginning...

  1. In the early 1980s I lived in East Dulwich, which the GLC made an Area of Improvement and Modernisation. Hard to believe now, considering the value of the houses.

  2. Looks like Eric Morecambe in pics 5 & 15. I shall watch this later thanks Bollops

  3. I thought the guitar bloke was quite good. Clever lyrics.
Also, I predict that triangular hairstyles will become fashionable again in the next decade.

    1. Ah, you're right, on both counts. The song is okay once the film gets going, it's just the beginning where it goes straight to "hippy with acoustic". I thought that might be discouraging for some (eg: me).

    2. Btw, I think the BFI site's description is a bit rude and unnecessary - says the song is "unintentionally hilarious" in places. Oof! I don't want that sort of thing from the BFI, thanks - keep it straight, please!

  4. Some fantastic and lovely looking windows/doors on the terrace houses in this film, they look a damn sight better than my white uPVC ones.

  5. I'm lucky enough to have the original 30s front door still on my house. Sturdy as hell. Even the stained glass window has survived.
